Abu Dhabi Tram 2025 | Yas Island to Zayed Airport

Abu Dhabi will soon welcome a modern tram network designed to link Yas Island with Zayed International Airport, a move expected to reshape both mobility and the real estate landscape in the Emirate.

The project was unveiled by Abu Dhabi Transport Company (ADT) on the opening day of the Global Rail Transport Infrastructure Exhibition and Conference. Approved by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), the Abu Dhabi Light Rail Project (LRT) will be developed in three phases, with the base phase being prioritized.

Project Overview

The Abu Dhabi Light Rail Project will be executed in three phases, starting with Yas Gateway Park and extending to Al Raha Mall

Base Phase: Begins at Yas Gateway Park, connecting key Yas Island landmarks such as Ferrari World, Yas Marina Circuit, and Yas Bay, before extending to Zayed International Airport, Etihad Plaza, and Al Raha Mall.

Future Phases: Will branch further into mainland Abu Dhabi, creating seamless links between residential, cultural, and commercial hubs.

A displayed map also suggested a possible Disneyland Abu Dhabi connection, though officials have yet to confirm this location.

Airport Connectivity: A Strategic Priority

Improving airport access is a top priority. Cheryl Chan, Strategic Adviser in Planning and Development at Abu Dhabi Airports, confirmed that efforts are underway to better link Zayed International Airport with the city and beyond.

We wanted to link up the airport with the rest of Abu Dhabi and have ADT provide that connectivity for us. Right now in terms of public transportation, there are only a few bus lines that come from downtown,” she explained.

The tram network will fill this gap, offering a direct, sustainable, and efficient transport system for residents, tourists, and business travelers.

Urbanloop & Future Mobility Innovations

Alongside the tram project, ADT revealed plans for Urbanloop, a French autonomous Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system, with pilot trials beginning on Reem Island within six months.

  • Pod-like autonomous vehicles will transport 2 to 12 passengers, with capacity for up to 1,500 passengers per hour.
  • Designed for the Gulf climate, they feature advanced air-conditioning and dust protection.
  • These pods will provide non-stop, point-to-point connections, targeting both everyday commuters and premium travelers (VIP, first class, business class).

This initiative complements Abu Dhabi’s broader strategy of testing autonomous and sustainable transport, already showcased through projects like the trackless tram between Marina Mall and Reem Mall and WeRide’s driverless robotaxis.

Real Estate Implications

The introduction of a tram system and innovative mobility solutions is not just a transport upgrade it is a real estate game-changer.

  • Capital Appreciation: Properties near tram stations in Yas Island, Al Raha, and the airport corridor are expected to see strong price growth.
  • Rental Demand: Apartments and villas close to Yas attractions and the tram line will appeal to expatriates, professionals, and short-term renters.
  • Tourism Impact: Easy access to attractions such as Ferrari World and the potential Disneyland Abu Dhabi will boost holiday rental opportunities.

Long-Term Growth: As phases 2 and 3 expand the network, emerging mainland areas could see rising demand from investors entering early.

Strategic Importance

Abu Dhabi’s transport upgrades align with the Emirate’s ambition to rank among the world’s top 30 cities in the Global Traffic Index by 2045. Sustainable, integrated mobility is seen as a cornerstone of urban competitiveness, lifestyle quality, and international investment appeal.

The Abu Dhabi Light Rail Project, unveiled by Abu Dhabi Transport Company (ADT), represents a transformative step in the Emirate’s development. By connecting Yas Island with Zayed International Airport and laying the groundwork for autonomous transport solutions like Urbanloop, Abu Dhabi is reinforcing its global positioning as a hub for innovation, sustainability, and high-quality living.

For investors, this is a strategic moment to position in areas along the tram corridor, anticipating capital appreciation and rental demand growth as connectivity reshapes Abu Dhabi’s real estate market.
